Celebrated in Uttar Pradesh and especially in Bihar, this festival is a very important festival that is celebrated with pomp all over the country. Chhat is not only a festival but a great festival which lasts for four days. This festival is offering Arghya, water, to the rising Lord Sun. It has a historical significance of its own.

Many historical stories are prevalent behind how the Chhat festival started. The story behind Chhat Puja in Purana is about King Priyavrat. King Priyavrat was childless, then Maharishi Kashyap performed a Putra Kameshti Yagya for the attainment of a son, and gave a kheer, sweet, to Priyavrat 's wife Sairandhri. Due to the rituals, the queen was pregnant, but unfortunately, she delivered a dead child.

Priyavrat went to the crematorium of his son decided to suicide in Jamuna River. At that time, Goddess Shashti (Chhat) appeared and told the king to worship her. The King told I never heard about the name Shashti (Chhat) She told that because she was born from the sixth part of the universe, she is named Shashti (Chhat). She asked the king to worship and inspire others to worship.

King Priyavrat kept fast for Goddess Shashti (Chhat). Goddesses blessed him with a son. This worship ritual appears on Kartik Shukla Shashthi from then onwards.

In Ramayana, when Rama-Sita returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile, they decided to perform the Rajasurya Yagya to get rid of the sin of killing Ravana. Mugdal Rishi was invited for it.

Sage Mugdal sanctified Mother Sita by sprinkling Ganga water and ordered to worship the Sun God on the sixth day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. Sitaji worshiped Lord Sun for six days in the ashram of Mugdal Rishi.

In Mahabharata, when the Pandavas lost their entire kingdom in gambling, Draupadi kept the Chhat fast. By this fast, the Pandavas won the war. The Sun and Chhathi Mayya are brother and sister. Therefore, the Sun and Chhathi Mayya are worshipped together.
